Mathematics (530) - Bachelor's Degree

Studies of Mathematics at the University enable students to experience the depth and breadth of the field of mathematics. At the Mathematics teaching program there are about 30 permanent members of faculty, many of them renowned worldwide in their field. Their areas of activity cover most aspects of modern mathematics, from Number Theory and Algebra to Probability and Applied Mathematics, from Geometry to Logic and Foundations of Mathematics.

Graduates of the Mathematics teaching program are in great demand as students for advanced degrees in the various fields of academic studies, for senior positions in the high-tech industry and the economy. Study of Mathematics as a teaching program in an extended scope is particularly suitable for students who intend to continue studying Mathematics for advanced degrees. Study of Mathematics as a teaching program in a regular scope is designed mainly for students who wish to study in a dual teaching program track, namely, a teaching program in Mathematics and another teaching program within or outside the faculty, as well as for students who wish to include teaching certificate studies in their BSc studies.

Requirements for passing from one year to the next: a passing grade in all compulsory courses in Mathematics.

To be awarded a BSc degree from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science students must take at least 134 credits and meet the requirements of the teaching programs in which they are studying. In some tracks the requirements of teaching programs amount to more than 134 credits, and students must take the number of credits required in those tracks.

The requirements of first-year Mathematics compulsory studies are identical in all Mathematics tracks (except for the Mathematics-Physics tracks 8010, 8012, 8013). Toward the second year it is possible to move freely from every Mathematics track to each of tracks 1010, 1011, 1012 (subject, of course, to meeting the requirements of the additional teaching program in tracks 1011, 1012). The requirements for compulsory studies of first-year Mathematics are included also in track 3013 of Computer Studies and students taking it can pass to the second year in dual track 8014 or other Mathematics tracks.
Master’s courses in the faculty are given in Hebrew unless a foreign student who does not speak Hebrew is taking the course. In such a case the course will be given in English.

Students who currently hold a degree in mathematics and have recorded exceptional achievements in their coursework (either at Hebrew University or another recognized university in Israel or abroad) can submit their candidacies for advanced Masters degree studies in mathematics.

Consideration will only be given to those candidates who achieved an average in pursuit of their degrees and in the required coursework of at least an 85 (the relevant courses are listed below.)

In some circumstances, faculty members will consider admitting students with an average below 85 yet over 80.  Students who hold degrees in other disciplines will be considered for acceptance, and the terms of acceptance will be assessed on a case by case basis.

For a student to be directly accepted for the Masters program (without need for additional coursework), the candidate’s prior coursework must include completion of the following courses:

-       Advanced Calculus 1- (80315) or Infi 3 (80415)

-       Advanced Calculus 2- (80316) or the pair courses Analysis on mnifolds (80426) + Functional analysis (80427)

-       Algebraic Structures 1- (80445)

-       Set Theory – (80200)

-       Probability Theory- (80420)

-       Introduction to Logic – (80423)

-       Algebraic Structures 2- (80446)

-       Introduction to Topology – (80516)

-       Differential Equations- (80320)

-       Measurement Theory- (80517)

-       Complex Functions – (80519)

With approval from a senior faculty member or head of the Masters track, in certain cases other relevant coursework may be accepted in place of those listed above.  Students who have completed a comprehensive physics degree may be accepted if they have completed the following courses:

-       Applied Mathematics 2 – (80157) can be in place of Differential Equations –(80320)

-       Applied Complex Functions (80314) can be in place of Complex Functions (80519)

-       Applied Probability (80312) can be in place of Probability Theory 1 (80420)

Consideration will also be given to students who have not completed some of the courses above.  If the candidate is accepted, he or she will typically be required to complete the missing coursework during the first year of study in addition to the required coursework towards the Masters degree.

In specific cases, students who demonstrate a particularly high level of academic proficiency may be eligible for exceptions to the guidelines above.
